A New Day

We've had several days with great sunrises and sunsets recently. I don't have space to show them all, but I can keep them in the archives until I need them. There are days with there isn't much color in the sky. Life is like that. There are days when we seem to be filled with excitement, things are happening and people from everywhere color our lives. Other days, life seems to be a little boring and not as filled with life as we would like. Maybe it's on those days that we should reflect on all that God has done in our lives and just how much color our Creator brings to our very soul. Without Him, our lives are truly void of color and purpose. Thank you Lord for all that you bring into my life and for walking with me each day.

This week, the inspirational song comes from one of my favorite Southern Gospel groups, The Booth Brothers. For all of the things that God has done in my life, I just have to stand and "Testify". Enjoy.

This winter I bought a bird feeder holder that attaches to the railing on the back deck of the house. Now, the bird feeder is considerably closer to the window than ever before. It took a week or two for the birds to get comfortable with the location in such close proximity to the house, but now they don't seem to mind at all. However, all of my photography must be done through the window, since they are not fond of me being outside when they are feeding.

I have also begun experimenting with capturing the birds in flight, rather than waiting on them to land on the feeder and just photograph them sitting still with a piece of food in their beaks. So far, so good. It takes a little more practice to anticipate when one will leave the trees in the back yard and make their way to this feeder, but the results are worth it, don't ya think?

Another thing that helps is a camera that will capture multiple frames. I am shooting with a Nikon D7000 DSLR that will capture up to six frames per second. I am shooting around 1/500th of a second. Even though the feeder is only about fifteen feet from the window, I am still using a telephoto lens. These images were captured using a Tamron 70-200mm f2.8 lens. The top to photos were captured at a setting of about f4.0, which is the reason for the darker background. The last capture is at f2.8, which lets more light into the frame and is the reason that the background is a lighter gray. I have three telephoto lenses. My primary lens is a Tamron 18-270mm. It is on my camera most of the time because it has the widest telephoto range and works well in a variety of situations. The Tamron 70-200mm is a great lens for lower light situations like Friday night high-school football, indoor basketball and other locations where you need the lower f-stop. My final telephoto lens is a Sigma 50-500mm lens that allows me to reach out at touch someone. It is great for wildlife captures, soccer matches, etc. Why do I use third-party lenses instead of Nikon? Cost! I don't earn a living from photography and I can't afford the Nikon lenses. The third-party lenses are typically 1/2-1/3 the cost of the major lenses. I bought the Sigma lens a couple of years ago on Ebay and it was a steal!

Now that I am semi-retired I will have more time to enjoy this hobby and get more serious about capturing quality images. I participate in meme's like Ruby Tuesday because they give me a reason to practice photographing various images and they force me to notice specific opportunities in the world around me. Ruby Tuesday and Skywatch Friday are my favorite meme's and I have been participating in both of them for over two years. If you like photography, I would encourage you to find opportunities like the blog meme's to practice and perfect your skills. You don't have to have a DSLR to capture good images. Many of my favorite Skywatch photos were taken with a little Canon point&shoot camera that I carry with me nearly everywhere I go. The most important thing is take photos and lots of them. Colorful New Day

One thing that I like about Skywatch is that God does all of the work. I just have to point the camera and capture the image. Every day is a new day with a new opportunity to capture the sky. It may be crystal clear and blue, or it may be filled with a rainbow of colors. There may be puffy white clouds or the sky may be filled with the promise of rain, or snow, but it is never the same from one day to the next. Whether we realize it or not, our lives are much the same way. God has done all of the work to order our steps, all we have to do is follow His plan. Each day should move us closer to Him. Sadly most of us never bother to determine what God would have us do. We just wake up each morning take control of our own lives and wonder why we run it off in the ditch so often. I am as guilty as the next person of not consulting my Creator each day regarding my life. I really need to be better about including Him in my morning.

My choice for an inspirational song today comes from one of the most popular contemporary groups. It speaks to the responsibility of Christians in this world and most particularly, Christian men. We were created to make a difference in this world. We were given the responsibility to be the spiritual leaders in our families. For the most part we have either delegated that authority to someone else or ignored it all together. Why? Well it takes courage to be the spiritual leader. We were made to be "Courageous". Enjoy.

Snack Time

We had our first dusting of snow two weeks ago and our first really cold temperatures. That combination brought birds to the feeders continuously. Finches and Cardinals abound, but these Woodpeckers are much less common. This feeder is actually a little small for him. As you can see, he has to wrap himself around the base in order to feed. Still, the nut and berry seed blend is worth the effort and he will make several trips during the day. I wonder what tomorrow will bring?

Rainbow Sky

There are mornings when I wake up and look out of the window, I know that the sunrise is going to be special. I hurry to get dressed and make my way to one of several of my favorite locations to photograph the beginning of a new day. I am never disappointed. This sunrise was captured just prior to the new year.

For some reason, last week's inspirational video didn't get uploaded correctly and I was not in a position to make the corrections. In fact, my wife and I were in Arlington, Texas for the Cotton Bowl game. So, I will try this again. Choirs are among my favorite means of praising the Lord and the Brooklyn Tabernacle choir is among the best in the business. So, here they are with "Days of Elijah". Enjoy.

This past week-end my wife and I traveled to Dallas (Arlington), TX to see the 2012 Cotton Bowl game between the Kansas State Wildcats and the Arkansas Razorbacks. We had a great time. One of the fun things to do at any major event is to people watch, and it is especially fun at college football games. Since the Razorbacks are red and white, I have selected a few examples of Hog fans at the game.

Okay, this isn't a Hog fan, this is "Tusk", the Razorback Mascot. I don't know if he got into the stadium or not.

The iconic headgear of a true Razorback fan is a Hawg Hat. This is one of the newer designs. By the way, you should probably know by now that I have no idea who these people are. They just happen to be random photos that I took outside of the stadium, prior to the game.

The ladies seemed to be the most colorful and decorative in their attire...however,

the students tend to get a little more creative with their hairstyles. But, my favorite Hawg fan of all is this young man.

WOOOooooooooo, PIG! SOOooie!!! RAZORBACKS!!!
Oh yes, the Razorback beat the Wildcats 29-16. Great game.

December Sunrise

I took a week of vacation between Christmas and New Years Day. One morning I looked out the window and knew there was going to be a great sunrise. So, I grabbed the camera, jumped in the car, and drove a couple of miles to one of my favorite places to capture sunrises and sunsets. I was not disappointed.

While you are reading this, my wife and I will be in Dallas (Arlington), TX for the Cotton Bowl. We have never been to a major college bowl game before, so this should be some serious fun. I am an OU alumni, but we live in Arkansas. That means that on Friday night I will be wearing Crimson (just like OU), and calling the the HOGS!!!! WOooooooo PIG! Soooie. RAZORBACKS!

My first inspirational song for the new year will come from one of the finest church choirs in the country, The Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir. As those of you know, who follow this blog, I LOVE Southern Gospel music. I love quartets. But I also love great choirs, and "Brooklyn Tab" is the best! There is something special about a hundred voices praising the Lord. Enjoy.

Camouflaged

There is a ravine behind our house and deer can be seen there quite often. This doe has been living in the area for at least the past 4 years. How do I know? If you look closely you will notice that she is carrying her left front leg. I have no idea how she has survived on three legs for this long. The wooded areas, not far from our home are filled with deer hunters in November. Somehow this little lady has managed to "dodge a bullet". Even more impressive is the fact that there are bobcats and coyotes in the area and a less than agile doe would seem to be an opportunity for them to take her down. Still, she finds a way to keep on keepin' on! I have all of the respect in the world for this little survivor.

Our friend, Mary the Teach, at Work of the Poet has announced that she will no longer be hosting Ruby Tuesday. It is a sad day for me. Ruby Tuesday was the first meme that I participated in and the one that rekindled my interest in photography as a serious hobby. Thank you for that Mary. As a result, I now participate in Wordless Wednesday and Skywatch Friday. I suppose I will have to find another meme to occupy my Tuesday's. These meme's force me to look for specific photo opportunities and capture images based on that subject. I am going to miss Ruby Tuesday, but life does go on and I understand Mary's desire to move on with her blog. Again, thank you Mary for hosting a great meme. Thank you fellow bloggers for capturing some wonderful images for me to view and thank you for visiting my humble outpost in the blogosphere.

Nut and Berry Blend

I bought a new bird feeder hanger a week ago. The base attaches to the rail on our deck and the arm swings out over the yard. Since I put the "Nut and Berry" blend of seed in it the birds have finally found the new food source and are starting to come on a regular basis.

Am I the only one that fails to see the point of these commercials? 4g Wireless is touted as being up to ten times faster than 3g. Okay, so what? Given the fact that 99.99% of cellphone communications are non-critical and that most of that communication is accurately displayed in this ad (mindless web browsing and texting), do I really need that information 26 seconds faster than someone else? Does it truly change my life for the better? 26 seconds! Really?

Christmas is over. The Christmas Music Marathon is complete for another year. All of the gifts have been unwrapped, and all of the food has been consumed. What do we do now?
I'm on vacation the rest of this week, so, at some point the decorations will come down. I have already started thinking about the 2012 edition of the Christmas Music Marathon and how I might make it better. First of all, I need to go back and catalog every song that I have posted during the first two marathons, find the very best ones and make sure that they are included in the 2012 edition. The very last post this year included a photo and scripture. The photo came from our primary tree. I think I will be adding more photos and scripture for the 2012 marathon.
Beginning January 2, I am officially semi-retired! I will be working three days a week. This will provide some more time for my wife and I to do a little traveling. We would both like to take a cruise, but we're having some difficulty deciding where we want to go. It will be either the Caribbean or Alaska. Oh, we don't have a time frame for it either.
This week will be spent with family. Christmas week is usually movie week at our house. We don't see that many movies during the year, but when Christmas week rolls around we will go to the movies several times. Sometime this week we're going to see Mission Impossible 4 with our daughter, son-in-law and the grandcrew. New Years Eve we will see War Horse with my sister-in-law and her husband. We've already seen Sherlock Holmes 2. It was very good.
2012 will begin with a trip to Dallas, TX and the Cotton Bowl where the Arkansas Razorbacks will take on the Kansas State Wildcats. We've never been to a major bowl game before, so this should be fun. Yes, I will have my camera and yes there will be photos posted the following week.
I am actually looking forward to 2012 and my reduced work schedule. I'm looking forward to spending more time with my wife and family. I'm looking forward to more fishing and a little more traveling. So, what does your new year look like? What do we do now?

Not only is this my favorite Christmas song, but this is, by far, my favorite video of this song. In an odd sort of way it reminds me of how the shepherds must have felt when the heavens were filled with angles praising the birth of the Savior. There are 650 voices in this presentation and I would have LOVED to have been there. I get chills every time I watch this video. So, turn up the volume or put on your headphones and prepare to be thrilled. Enjoy.

Dad

April 10, 1920 - December 16, 2009

Today is the second anniversary of the passing of my Father. I loved him and I miss him deeply. He was my hero in more ways than he could have ever known or I was ever able to express. I have good days, when I don't think about him at all. I have good days when I remember him with love. Then, I have those days when I just hurt, because he's not here. Every child who loses their last parent knows what I'm talking about. You have made the transition from child to patriarch. You have become the oldest generation in the family.
No one truly knows how long dad had that lump in his abdomen that would be diagnosed as cancer in September of 2009. By the time treatment started the outcome was already known. On December 16, 2009, dad lost his battle with cancer, but won the victory over death's sting. Even though dad stepped into the eternity and the arms of Christ, deep down inside I would have loved One Last Christmas.

I rejoice in the fact that dad's chains are gone, and I look forward to that day when my chains will be broken as well. The chains of disease, sorrow, and death. As a Christian, when our days are finished here, our chains will be gone and we will rest in arms of our Savior. This next video is not a Christmas song. It is one of the songs from dad's memorial service. It is one of my favorite arrangements of a classic Hymn. Here is Chris Tomlin singing "Amazing Grace, My Chains Are Gone".

In the midst of the Holiday shopping rush we can lose sight of the true meaning of Christmas. It's not about the presents. It's not about the parties or the food, or even the music of the season. It's about the birth of the Savior. God, in His marvelous wisdom and grace, provided us with a means to have an eternal relationship with Him through His Son, Jesus Christ. In the midst of all of the hustle and bustle, we could all use a silent night. Merry Christmas.

This photo was taken back in February. I have four or five locations that are favorite places to capture sunrises and sunsets. They give me great views, without the trappings of civilization. These areas are free of power lines, traffic lights, buildings etc. I know that it will not always be like this, so I value these locations and visit them when I know there will be a special opportunity to capture a beautiful moment in nature.

The Old Testament prophet Isaiah told us that Christ would come. His exact words were, "For unto us a Child is born, unto us a Son is given; and the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace." On a cold winter night, the city of Bethlehem, Christ is come.

With the birth of a Savior, God made the Glorious Impossible, possible.

Everyone has a favorite Christmas song and everyone has a favorite artist associated with that song. There are several songs that I count among my favorites and numerous artists that I enjoy listening to. I have shared several of them with you over the past thirteen days. Almost everyone counts "O Holy Night" among their Christmas favorites and many artists do outstanding arrangements of this musical icon. If you have never heard David Phelps do this song, then I encourage you to turn up the volume a little or put on your head phones, brace yourself and listen to perhaps the most powerful arrangement available. Have you ever wondered what happens while you are sleeping? Well the world around you goes on. Half a world away it is mid-day and people are going about their business. Where you live, the night shift is at work. You get up in the morning and turn on the radio or the television to see or hear what happened in the world, while you were sleeping. There was a time without radio, television, or any form of mass communication. On a cold winter night, in Bethlehem, while the city slept, a Savior was born and the world has never been the same. May the Joy that is this season live in your home.

A Baby Changes Everything

Christmas Music Marathon - Day 6

Have you ever noticed how the birth of a baby changes the dynamics of a family? A couple becomes parents. Parents become grandparents, while brothers and sisters become aunts and uncles. There is joy in the house. There is excitement everywhere.
This is especially true with the birth of Christ. He changed the way we deal with sin. The God of all creation sent His Son to live a sinless life among us. Jesus willingly gave that life as a sacrifice for our sins so that we might have eternal life. Yes, on that first Christmas night in Bethlehem, "A Baby Changes Everything".

So what should our response be to this life changing event? We have been given a gift that is beyond our comprehension and there is nothing that we can say or do, to earn or repay such a marvelous thing as eternal life. We must however, accept that gift. There can be only one appropriate response. Once we have acknowledged our need for a Savior, accepted Christ as that Savior and invited Him into our hearts, our only response can be adoration. "Oh, Come All Ye Faithful."

Christmas Music Marathon

As we move a little deeper into the Christmas season, Christmas music will fill the air. Did you know that there has always been music associated with the birth of Christ.

And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord. This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.”
Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying,
“Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.”

When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let’s go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about.”

Mary Miraculously Conceives

34 Then Mary said to the angel, “How can this be, since I do not know a man?”

One can only imagine what went through Mary's mind the following days and weeks. Did she really realize what was happening to her. Did she truly realize who her Son was going to be? The lyrics to this song were written by Mark Lowery. The first arrangement I ever heard was done by Kathy Mattea. I think it may still be my favorite arrangement of this song. "Mary Did You Know?" Christmas Music Marathon - Season II

Last year I began a new tradition on this blog. I posted a Christmas music video every day from December 1, thru Christmas Day. I enjoyed searching out the music so much, that I am going to do it again. I would say that I am bringing this back by popular demand, but that would be stretching the truth. The truth is this, the Christmas season begins the day after Thanksgiving in the Driller abode. I place Christmas music in the home stereo and both cars. I have two playlists on my computer of Christmas music, about 8 hours each, that I take to the office and play for my enjoyment. While you are reading this post, I will probably be putting up the Christmas lights around the house and we will be setting up the tree this week-end. During the next 30 days, you will hear music from some of my favorite artists including, Martina McBride, Trisha Yearwood, John Berry, Signature Sound, The Gaither Vocal Band, David Phelps, Kathy Matea, Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir and others. Last year I started with a video from Signature Sound. I am going to start this season with the boys again, only a different song. Let's start this year's celebration with "Changed by a Baby Boy" Enjoy.

A Man and His Dog

My daughter and son-in-law have a dog...a Yorkshire Terrier. Taz is not exactly a "manly" dog, if you know what I mean. Recently my daughter had the opportunity to rescue an abandoned pup, a black lab mix. Wylie will be a much more manly canine one of these days. I think the ruby red leash is perfect for him.

Turnberry Isle Resort

In October I took a business trip to Turnberry Isle Resort in Florida. It is located between Ft. Lauderdale and Miami. It is a very nice place to spend a couple days. Earlier in the year I stayed at the Fountain Bleu in Miami. I like Turnberry much better. It is a more relaxed environment. The photo above was the view from my balcony on the fourth floor. It is a beautiful place to spend a few days, but it's not home. Regardless of how beautiful a place I am required to stay when traveling on business, I always look forward to getting on that plane and coming home to Northwest Arkansas. For the Christian, this world is much the same way. It may be the only place we know, and it may may be as well manicured as the Turnberry, but it is not home. Our home is in a place prepared for us by our Savior. As I grow older, I understand a little better why some senior adult Christians are ready to go home. I'm not as thin as I once was, and never will be again. I'm not as athletic as I once was, and never will be again. Age has a way of taking a little of the joy out of life, but there is a place where neither age nor physical condition will not be an issue. Don't get me wrong, I'm not ready to go just yet, but I do understand the message in this gospel favorite. There will come a day when I will say, "Precious Lord, Lead Me Home". This past week-end found us taking the youngest granddaughter to her soccer tournament in Tulsa, well actually Sand Springs, Ok. One of our opponents were in all red uniforms, so it made a perfect Ruby Tuesday photo opportunity. These girls are 9-10 years of age. They are just beginning to show some real soccer skills and teamwork at this age.

We won this match 2-0, which was a bit of an upset. The other team was much bigger and I believe most of their girls were at the older end of the age bracket. Tulsa soccer clubs are usually very good, so it was a big deal to beat one of their clubs.

The granddaughter is not in any of these photos. These just happen to be what I picked out for Ruby Tuesday. I've got other captures of her that I will share later. Happy Ruby Tuesday all.

Recently we were in Tulsa, my home town, for a Gaither Homecoming concert. We took a day to visit a few places I have not visited in a very long time. One of our stops was the Tulsa Rose Garden. Scroll down to my Wordless Wednesday post to see the flowers. This is the greenhouse located on the grounds. The main building is a mansion built in 1919. There is a carriage house and this green house located immediately behind the mansion. I cannot imagine living at this scale. The Rose Garden, Woodward Park, and the mansion make up a very special place, prepared for the enjoyment of the citizens of Tulsa.
I am reminded that there is a place prepared for me and it is far beyond my imagination. My Creator, Savior, and Heavenly Father have prepared it for me. As beautiful as the grounds of the Rose Garden are, they will pale in comparison to that place that I will spend eternity. For that reason, I don't want to get adjusted to this world. The Gaithers say it much better than I. Enjoy and have a blessed week-end.

Late October Knock-out.

We had a very wet Spring in Northwest Arkansas. Then we had a very long, hot, dry Summer. I would not pretend to imply that our Summer was a brutal as our neighbors to the south in Texas, but it was still a very tough summer on the plants. I have lost several shrubs. However, the Knock-out roses seemed to have survived quite nicely and are blooming more profusely now than ever before. We've had two frosts and I believe that the first hard freeze in just around the corner, so, I'll be pruning these hardy little bushes for the winter very soon. Still, when I came home from work the other evening I just thought that a final photo shoot was in order. This capture turned out to be my favorite gem of the the group. Happy Ruby Tuesday all.

2011 Blog Blast For Peace

What exactly makes for peace and why should we pursue it. It's such a simple word. Peace is not simply the absence of conflict, whether it be personal or international. Peace is not simply tolerance of others, regardless of their beliefs, behavior, or attitudes. In order to have peace on a grand scale, it is necessary to have peace on a personal level. Peace cannot be found in wealth. It cannot be found in power. It cannot be found in pleasure. Our world is filled with miserable people who have tried to find peace in all of these things. True peace comes from our Creator. However, we must seek it out. Again, the world is filled with miserable people who thought that merely labeling themselves as Christians would bring peace into their lives. We are not promised wealth. We are not promised power. We are not promised a life filled with pleasure. We are promised that the God who created us and sent His Son to die on a cross for our sins, will give us peace in the midst of our surroundings. Regardless of our position in life and the circumstances we find ourselves in, if we can look to God Almighty and truly say, "It Is Well With My Soul", then we have found peace. May you and yours find peace. Enjoy.

On a recent business trip to the Ft. Lauderdale/Miami FL area I was fortunate enough to stay at theTurnberry Isle hotel and resort. While walking around a portion of the golf course one morning, I found this lovely couple. I have forgotten the specific name for this duck, but I do find that ruby red head interesting.
Moving riight along, it is fall in the Ozarks and the leaves are in full color right now. If you would like an Autumn themed header photo for your blog, please feel free to use one of these below. High School Homecoming

Last Friday night was the local high school homecoming football game. We're ranked No. 1 in the state and are undefeated. The game wasn't much of a contest. Saturday evening was the homecoming dance. The oldest grand daughter is fifteen and a sophomore, so she was invited to the dance. Here are a couple of photos. Lord I feel old.

She met all of her girlfriends at a local park for a photo shoot prior to dinner and the dance. It's a local tradition. The park is full of parents taking photos of their kids. This will be repeated at prom in the spring.

Yes, they met the boys there too. You notice that she's in the middle. When there's a party, she's going to be in the middle of it have more fun than anyone.

Yuk! She had a date...and it wasn't her Papa. I'm hurt.

Blue Clear Sky

After a long hot summer, the crisp, cool, clear air of autumn is most welcome here in the Ozarks. It was a day that I actually didn't mind that fact that there was not a cloud in the sky. This week-end promises to be more of the same.

For the inspirational song this week, I am going to return to one of my favorite contemporary Christian artists, Jeremy Camp. The song reminds me of something that I fail to do on a regular basis. When I get up in the morning, I often fail to begin my day by spending time with my Savior. I get up, shower, dress, have a little breakfast and head to work. I fail to invite the creator of the universe to come along and guide me through my day. Many people rely on various things to guide them through life. Many people spend time analyzing the stock market and social trends to help them make the correct decisions regarding their daily lives. Some rely on horoscopes, others seek the wisdom to "life coaches". Give all of the self-help books, Oprah's, Dr. Ruth's , and other experts telling us what we should be doing to experience the "good life", it is little wonder that many people are confused and frustrated. I just need to remember, "In the morning, when I rise, Give Me Jesus." The rest of my day will go well for me. Have a blessed week-end.

Party Dress

This ruby red gown is on display at the Churchill Downs museum. I didn't read the whole story behind it, but the dress is associated with one of the parties that are held around town, in connection with the Kentucky Derby. And yes, it does look like large rose blossoms, after all, the Derby is the Run for The Roses.

On another note, is it just me or are the retailers rushing Christmas this year? Lowe's and Walmart already have their artificial trees, lights and exterior displays for sale. I don't expect the start of the Christmas season to be limited to the day after Thanksgiving any more, but some people haven't finished their back to school shopping yet and Santa is already in the garden center.

While on vacation last week, I got a phone call informing me that my aunt had passed away. She was my last living aunt and the one most like a big sister to me. Our families took vacations together, so my cousins are more like younger siblings than cousins. We were in Louisville, KY when the news came, so we left on Friday to drive to Decatur, IL for the memorial service. One of my cousins lives on Lake Decatur and this was the sunrise the morning of the memorial service.
Death serves as a reminder to the living that our days are numbered and that life is fleeting. We have a responsibility to live each day as if it were our last. Our life should make the world around us a better place. The world around my aunt was a better place because of her presence.
My inspirational song this week comes from Chris Tomlin. While death is a reminder of our mortality, Christ is a reminder that life everlasting belongs to the redeemed, and that death is merely the portal through which we must pass. There will come a day when all of us will be called to pass from this world. Having invited Christ into my heart and accepting Him as my Lord and Savior, I know that the instant that I leave this world, I will rise again in the presence of my Lord. Enjoy.

National Quartet Convention Final Post

My tribute to the National Quartet Convention would not be complete without some music from the most popular group in Gospel Music today, the Gaither Vocal Band. The Gaithers have been around since the late '50's. The group started as the Gaither Trio, featuring Bill Gaither, his wife Gloria, and his Brother Danny. Over the years the group transitioned into the Gaither Vocal Band and has featured some of the finest voices ever to grace the gospel stage. The current edition is no different. Bill still heads the group and sings the bass line. Mark Lowery provides some comic relief and sings the baritone harmony. Then there are the tenors, Michael English, Wes Hampton, and David Phelps. It just doesn't get any better than this. Enjoy.

This week my wife and I are attending the National Quartet Convention in Louisville, KY. The very best in Southern Gospel music will be there and the music will almost non stop for a week. I honor of the occasion I will be posting videos each day that represent the groups that we will be seeing. First up is one of my very favorite groups, Ernie Haas and Signature Sound. Ernie is the lead tenor. His father-in-law was the late George Younce, arguably the best bass ever to sing Gospel music and he founded arguably the best quartet in the history of the genre, The Cathedrals. Skywatch Friday, A Tribute To 9/11

Usually Skywatch Friday is filled with images of beautiful skies. There are sunrises and sunsets posted that nearly take your breath away. There was a day when the clear blue sky was filled with fire, smoke and death. The country was filled with unbelief, sorrow, and unimaginable pain.
Do you remember where you were when you got the news. I was in a board meeting when some one came in and announced that a plane had crashed into the World Trade Center. Like most, we thought, what a terrible accident. When news came of the second plane hitting the second tower, and there was no doubt that it was a terrorist attack, work virtually came to a halt as staff were glued to their radios to find out more about what was going on. No one ever expected this kind of murderous act to be carried out on our soil. But, in one horrible day, we found ourselves fully engaged in the war on terrorism. I think we now know how our parents felt when the news of Pearl Harbor reached their ears. We were horrified, stunned, and angered, all at once. My heart still breaks for those who lost loved ones on that day, especially those who never found any sign of their loved one, to give them closure. Many lives just vanished. That would be almost too painful to bear. But the spirit that resides in those left behind has been most admirable. and, on Sunday, 9/11/11 they will have a memorial to visit and honor those who were taken from them.Often times music speaks to me better than mere words and this is one of those times. Few say it any better than Gloria Gaither and the Gaither Vocal Band. May those who suffered loss on that day find closure and a measure of peace in this memorial.

I am fortunate to have three or four places that I can go to photograph sunrises and sunsets that are free of power lines, traffic, light poles and other obstructions. These are not great expanses of space, just places with great views.

Everything From A to Z

Last Saturday my wife and I took a one hour drive south to Alma, Arkansas. There is a business on the north edge of town that has everything from A to Z. In fact that is the name of the business. There is A to Z Sporting Goods, A to Z Gifts, A to Z Fashions, A to Z Furniture and A to Z Tools.

I have to admit, my favorite building was A to Z tools. Most of the merchandise was off brand, over-runs, discontinued items, or cheap imports, but there were bargains to be found for the knowledgeable shopper.

As you can see, this is a NO FRILLS shopping experience, but it does kill a hot afternoon in air conditioned comfort. This place makes Walmart look like Neiman Marcus!

I have to say that the Sporting Goods building offered the least number of true bargains. Much of the product in here was close to retail price. Still, it was an interesting place.

The Flowers & Gifts building was, by far the most colorful and is the building that housed the artificial Ruby Red sunflowers. I spent very little time in here, but there were some very good prices on back packs of all things.

So, if you're looking for something to do on a hot summer day, and live withing an hour of this place, it is a fun experience. I'm sure you have something similar in your area. What's your favorite dive place to kill time?

Room With A View

This was the view from my room at the Fountain Bleu Resort in Miami Beach. It's not like I spent a lot of time on the tiny balcony staring at the ocean. I just thought this would make a good capture for a Skywatch post. I believe that building next door is vacant because I never saw any lights on in the evening. It looks like it might be a high-end condo, so maybe all of the owners only come down in the winter. That's a jet ski flying across the water.
I have been blessed throughout this life and I am forever grateful. I have my health, I've been married for thirty-seven years, our family lives close by, and the list goes on. In fact if I stop to thank God for all that He has done, I can never praise Him enough. With that thought, here is this week's inspirational song from Greater Vision. Have a blessed week-end.

Morning Has Broken

Last week I was on a business trip. The event I attended was held at the Fountain Bleu hotel in Miami beach. One morning we had breakfast on the terrace. It was hot. It was humid. It was not pleasant, but the view was spectacular. I'm not sure if the bit of haze you see in these photos is real, or just the camera lens fogging up. At any rate, the photo is much more pleasant than actually being there. At least on that day.

Saturday morning 80 youth and sponsors, from our church, boarded these bright red buses to go on a mission trip. The destination, South Chicago, IL. They will be there all week, assisting with Vacation Bible School and worship services. Lives will be changed.

Prior to boarding the buses, there was a brief meeting to answer any last minute questions. It's a great group of kids and they are doing a wonderful work.

Sky High Skywatch

I was flying home from Miami Beach this week. Just a few minutes before we landed, the plane flew through this cloud formation. It is the first time that I have actually had my pocket camera handy. It won't be the last time though.

Times like this remind me just how great God really is and how small I am. I cannot begin to wrap my head around all that God is or why He does the things that He does. We should not expect to understand or know the reason why everything happens. We simply need to know, nothing happens that is a surprise to our Creator. The Great Wall of Bella Vista

Do you remember those days in elementary school when you would get up in front of the room and tell your classmates about your summer vacation? Maybe you played baseball all summer, or spent two weeks with your grandparents. Whatever the major event in your summer was, you shared the adventure with your peers. Well, this summer I built a wall.
I've been threatening to do this project for several years. The slope of the yard right at the house is relatively steep and it's difficult to maintain a planting area. So, phase I of my project involved building this wall of landscape stone four levels. Each level is about 18 inches high. I believe that first level is just over 2 feet tall. I built that lowest level last summer.

Two weeks later, it's time to start phase II of the Great Wall project. The first step in phase II of the project involved removing some plant material and metal edging. As you can see, I have already planted the shrubs in the area completed as a part of phase I. We're making progress.

Once the prep work was done, it was time to start laying the stone. I usually started around 7:30 a.m. because it's going be 95 degrees by noon and there will be no shade in the work zone. After I got started, I realized that I was going to have to rework a small section of that third tier in phase I in order to get a smooth transition around the corner.

Once the stones were placed and leveled, it was time to place the new plants. Needless to say, I made several trips to Lowe's during this project. The plants include a yew, several knockout roses and some variegated laroipe. Prior to setting the plants, I had to add about 24 bags of top soil and two bales of peat moss for the entire project. Once the soil was installed I put down a layer of landscape weed guard material.

After the plants were in place, it was time to add the mulch and water the whole thing. Phase II complete. WooHooo, we're almost done.

Another two weeks pass and now I'm ready to finish this project. The final phase began with removing some more of the metal edging. I thought this phase was going to be pretty simple and go quickly. However, there was just enough slope to this secion of the planting bed that I still had to do three tiers.

Three week-ends total, over a period of six weeks and the final product looks like this! Ta da, The Great Wall of Bella Vista is complete!!! Not bad for a 64 year old, nearing retirement. All in all, it took two pallets of stone, 24 bags to top soil, two bales of peat moss, and another 24 bags of mulch. There is also the better part of a 250' roll of weed guard material in there somewhere.

So, how are you spending your summer? I think I'll go fishing now.

Skywatch Friday Thoughts and More

Our family vacation this year was spent at Still Waters Resort in Branson, MO. I would recommend this place to anyone looking for some place to spend quality time with your family. What did we do, you ask. Well....we rented a pontoon boat with a 115hp engine and a tube. So...

I got to drive and try to dislodge everyone else from the tube.

Next up, our daughter and Son-in-law rented jet skis and took the grand crew for rides. It has been said that sometimes speeds reached 55 mph!

Paddle boats and kayaks were always available for free.

There is nothing wrong with just hanging out in a tube and not being pulled behind a boat.
And, swimming in the lake from the marina or in the pools were also options. In fact, we spent most of our time at the resort and very little time in Branson. It was a great time for everyone. We're already planning next year's trip.

Since this post is all about the lake and spending time on and in the water, I need an appropriate inspirational song to wrap up this week. So I give you one of my favorite groups, Signature Sound Quartet and "Step Into The Water." Enjoy and have a blessed week-end.

While on vacation in Branson, MO. we spent our first afternoon at Branson Landing. It is a shopping mall, anchored by one of my favorite places, a Bass Pro Shop. There are a number of specialty stores and restaurants as well. One of the specialty stores is the subject of my Ruby Tuesday post.

Ride MakerZ is kind of like Build-a-Bear for those with a need for speed. You can take any one of a number of body choices and customize your ride to suit yourself. You can jack it up with a "monster truck" look or you can give it a full race adaptation. The bodies start at about $20 and go as high as $40. You can add, spoilers, scoops, chrome trim, even radio control. One must be mindful of the budget when building these little rides. You can drop a $100 bill if you make it radio controlled and add too many custom features. Still, the results can be pretty cool.

Here is a pretty cool adaptation of a new Camaro. Mustangs are also available for you Ford enthusiasts.

There is this Viper looking body, for those so inclined.

And for you Pixar fans, there is Lighting McQueen. Mater is also available in several color options.
If you're still wondering whether or not I built myself a custom Ride, the answer is no. At least not on this visit. I'm thinking of something a little more airborne.

Skywatch Friday

Last week we spent four days with the family at Still Waters Resort on Table Rock Lake, MO. It is just outside of Branson. We had a wonderful time. One evening I was able to capture this view of the marina. Every time I look at this capture, it brings a smile to my face and a sense of peace to me. It was a very relaxing vacation. We all need a little down time in our lives. I pray that you are able to spend a few days with those you love, doing things that bring you joy.
Today is the beginning of the 4th of July week-end. It is a time when this nation celebrates it's independence. One thing that we must never forget, is that freedom is not free. It is paid for with the blood of men and women willing to lay down their lives in order that we may enjoy a lifestyle unlike anywhere else on this earth. From our founding fathers to those currently serving around the globe, this nation is blessed with young people who are willing to stand in harms way to protect our freedom and prevent the spread of those values that threaten it, regardless of the source. This Independence Day, remember to thank a service personnel or a veteran for their sacrifice. Thank the families who must live without their serviceman while he/she is away. Until the Lord returns, this is the only way to Let Freedom Ring. Have a blessed week-end.
